...every so often I go back and re-read 'The Martian Chronicles' by Ray Bradbury. A truly heart-breakingly beautiful book. It really is. One of those ones that even people who don't read sci-fi, nor like sci-fi, should read. A bit dated in places (hey, give him a break, he reflected the society of the time) but still terrific.

Most other sci-fi is rubbish. (I have a rule: 98% of _everything_, regardless (music, books, clothes, people..) is rubbish. Finding the good (music, books, clothes, people...) is what life is all about. Sort of. I digress.

The only other sci-fi book I would recommend would be 'Neverness' by David Zindell, although if you aren't of a philisophic bent, you might not like it. But I do. It rules.

There are a few Asimovs, perhaps, maybe a Heinlein or two, but beyond that, I can't think of anything to recommend. Right now. That might change. Who knows? My memory has just been sold...

I am interested in reading some older Bradbury. a couple years ago I tried to read Let's All Kill Constance, and it is one of the few books that I judged negatively without reading the entire thing.

The Martian Chronicles sounds interestng.

ooh bradbury! i have not as yet read the martian chronicles, but i have rwad a lot of his short stories, and i love a lot of them. he is kind of beyond scifi i feel, he uses the situations and plot devices of the common sci fi landscape to give us home truths about ourselves, and to open our eyes to other possible things. my favorite story of his is called the roar of distant thunder (or the sound of distant thunder--i have seen it with both titles Embarassed ) truly chilling and far scarier than any ghost story or macabre tale

so i will go a hunting for the martian chronicles right quick! thank you for the recommendation
